Shantaram: Upcoming 2011

A film adaptation of author Gregory David Roberts' "Shantaram" is currently in development and will be released sometime in 2011. The novel follows an Austrailian bank robber addicted to heroin who is later convicted and sent to Pentridge prison. He then escapes from the prison in broad daylight and flees to India, where he stays in hiding for 10 years. Johnny Depp, who loves the book, is currently attached to play the lead, with Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan portraying an Indian mobster. The film is going to be written by "Forrest Gump", "Munich", and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" writer Eric Roth and Indian director, Mira Nair signed on to direct. She has also directed 2004's "Vanity Fair" and upcoming 2009 films, "New York, I Love You" and "Amelia", a biopic about the life of Amelia Earhart starring Hillary Swank, Richard Gere, and Ewan McGregor.
