The Rum Diary: Upcoming 2010
"The Rum Diary" is a film adaptation of the 1998 Hunter S. Thompson novel and it will star Johnny Depp. Depp who was a close friend of Thompson, has been trying to get this movie made since the year 2000. The film follows Paul Kemp a New York journalist who grows tired of America under the Eisenhower administration and decides to move to San Juan, Puerto Rico. Once in Puerto Rico, Kemp begins to write for the fictitious paper The San Juan Daily News. While working for the paper, Kemp begins drinking rum heavily and becomes infatuated with Chenault, a colleague's girlfriend. The film also stars Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) as the colleague, Amber Heard (Pineapple Express) as Chenault, Giovanni Ribisi (Saving Private Ryan) as Moburg, and Academy Award nominee Richard Jenkins (The Visitor) as the paper's editor. The story takes place in the late 1950s. Thompson originally wrote the story in the early 60s, when he traveled from New York to San Juan to write for a ill-fated sports paper. Thompson then applied to write for The San Juan Star, in which he was denied. He did however became friends with some Star writers and that provided context for "The Rum Diary" plotline. The movie was written and directed by Academy Award nominee Bruce Robinson (The Killing Fields). "The Rum Diary" will be released in theaters sometime in 2010.
